At Studio 58 Pottery LLC, we blend the art of hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery with the mesmerizing world of fused glass. Our self-taught journey began back in high school, but it was a community education class that truly sparked our love for the pottery wheel—transforming a simple hobby into a passionate pursuit. This was the birth of Studio 58, where we now craft stunning pieces that reflect the beauty, unpredictability, and creative freedom these two mediums offer.
For us, pottery is more than an art form—it's a stress reliever, a sanctuary where the world fades away with each turn of the wheel. The act of shaping clay, feeling it come to life beneath our hands, is a meditative experience, one that creates a unique connection between the artist and the material. The thrill of opening the kiln never fades; each piece reveals something new—unexpected yet beautiful, like a hidden treasure.
Whether working in our pottery studio or with glass, we pride ourselves on the use of rich color, striking designs, and impeccable craftsmanship. Every creation that leaves Studio 58 is a testament to our dedication, passion, and the unending joy we find in our art.

The Studio 58 Pottery Process
Throwing:
The pottery creation begins with the vessel being skillfully thrown on the wheel. Afterward, the piece is left to dry until it reaches the leather-hard stage, typically overnight, which allows for optimal handling and carving.
Carving and Texturing:
At the leather-hard stage, the vessel is carefully trimmed, and any additional elements such as handles and decorative accents are applied. The studio's signature logo is also added at this stage, ensuring that each piece carries its unique mark of craftsmanship.
Drying:
Following the initial shaping and embellishments, the vessel undergoes a slow drying process over the course of several days, at which point it is considered "greenware." This stage ensures the piece is thoroughly dry before the first firing.
Electric Kiln Firing (Bisque Firing):
Once dry, the pottery is placed in an electric kiln for its first firing, known as bisque firing. This process, which takes approximately one day, hardens the piece to a more durable state referred to as bisqueware. The kiln reaches temperatures of around 1900˚F, and the pottery remains inside to cool down gradually for the next 24 hours.
Glazing:
After the bisque firing, the pottery is ready for glazing. We use a combination of carefully selected commercial glazes, applied in multiple layers to achieve the desired finish. All glazes are natural, lead-free, and non-toxic. Once the glazing is complete, the piece is ready for its final firing. Our glazing methods ensure that the finished product is not only visually striking but also functional, being food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe.
Glaze Firing:
The glazed pieces are loaded into the kiln for the final glaze firing, which takes approximately twelve hours. During this firing, the kiln reaches temperatures of up to 2370˚F. Once the firing is complete, the kiln requires an additional 12 to 14 hours to cool before the pottery can be carefully unloaded.
Finishing Touches:
After the final glaze firing, each piece is carefully inspected and any sharp edges on the bottom are smoothed through sanding. This ensures a high-quality, finished product. The pottery is then packaged and prepared for sale.
The meticulous process behind each piece of Studio 58 pottery results in distinctive, heirloom-quality work. Whether decorative or functional, every item is crafted from all-natural clay and glazed with mineral-based, eco-friendly materials, making it a true example of sustainable craftsmanship.
Our glazes are free of lead and other heavy metals. We fire our pots at high temperatures, which ensures that all of the glaze components are entirely encapsulated and will not leach into your food. We use glazes from national companies that make glazes that are food safe only.

When comparing stoneware with a matte finish to one with a gloss finish, the key difference is that a matte stoneware has a dull, non-reflective surface while a gloss stoneware has a shiny, highly reflective surface; generally, gloss stoneware is easier to clean and more resistant to scratches, but a matte finish offers a more subtle, textured aesthetic and can hide minor imperfections better..
